Job Title: Head, Internal Audit and Control

Location: Benin City, Edo

Position Overview

  • The Head, Internal Audit and Control, is a senior leadership position responsible for ensuring the effectiveness of the bank’s internal control systems, risk management processes, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • The role involves conducting comprehensive audits, identifying weaknesses in systems and processes, and recommending actionable solutions to safeguard the bank’s assets, maintain operational integrity, and ensure adherence to industry standards.
  • This position requires a meticulous, ethical, and analytical professional capable of leading the internal audit team and fostering a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Internal Audit and Assurance:

  • Develop and execute the annual internal audit plan, ensuring comprehensive coverage of all business processes and operations.
  • Conduct regular audits of the bank’s operations, financial statements, and IT systems to identify risks, weaknesses, or non-compliance issues.
  • Prepare and present detailed audit reports, including findings, risks, and recommendations, to senior management and the board of directors.
  • Conduct follow-up audits to ensure the effective implementation of recommended corrective actions.

Leadership and Team Development:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the internal audit team, ensuring high levels of performance and professionalism.
  • Set clear performance goals for the audit team and conduct periodic evaluations to monitor progress.
  • Provide training and development opportunities to enhance the technical skills and knowledge of the audit staff.

Strategic Contribution:

  • Advise senior management on risk exposure, control deficiencies, and compliance issues.
  • Contribute to the development of the bank’s strategic goals by providing insights from audits and risk assessments.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement within the organization.

Risk Management and Control:

  • Evaluate and enhance the bank’s internal control systems to ensure the prevention of fraud, errors, and financial misstatements.
  • Identify, assess, and monitor risks associated with the bank’s operations, products, and services.
  • Collaborate with management to develop and implement risk mitigation strategies and policies.
  • Monitor and report on the effectiveness of implemented risk controls.

Compliance and Regulatory Adherence:

  • Ensure the bank complies with all regulatory requirements, including those set by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other relevant authorities.
  • Monitor adherence to internal policies, procedures, and ethical standards.
  • Liaise with external auditors, regulators, and stakeholders during audits and inspections, addressing their findings and implementing recommendations.

Fraud Prevention and Investigation:

  • Develop and implement fraud detection and prevention mechanisms across all bank operations.
  • Lead investigations into suspected fraud, misconduct, or irregularities, and report findings to senior management.
  • Establish a whistleblowing framework to encourage the reporting of fraudulent activities.

Key Qualifications

  • Professional certifications such as ICAN (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria), ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), or CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) are mandatory.
  • Additional certifications in risk management, compliance, or forensic auditing are an added advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in auditing, compliance, or risk management, with at least 2 years in a leadership role in the banking or microfinance sector.
  • Proven track record of successfully identifying and mitigating risks in financial operations.
  • Experience in managing audits and regulatory inspections in a financial institution.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Analytical Thinking: Strong ability to assess complex systems, identify risks, and recommend actionable solutions.
  • Attention to Detail: Exceptional accuracy in evaluating financial and operational data.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of CBN regulations, financial reporting standards, and audit practices.
  • Ethics and Integrity: Unwavering commitment to ethical conduct and the principles of transparency and accountability.
  • Technology Proficiency: Familiarity with audit software and banking systems for conducting automated audits.
  • Leadership Skills: Ability to inspire, lead, and develop a high-performing audit team.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication for presenting audit findings and engaging with stakeholders.

Salary

N300,000 – N350,000 per month.
